You can easily use GlotDojo to learn any language with YouTube videos. Open Home => Search YouTube => Type in a keyword or video title to find a video.

You can do advanced search by clicking in the search box => Filter icon.

Click Search to see your search results.

Watch video with dual subtitles

To watch a video with dual subtitles, tap Settings to open subtitle settings.

Main sub: The main subtitles. Set this subtitles in the language you are learning so you can look up by tapping on it.

Trans sub: The translation subtitles. You can set this subtitles in your mother tongue or a language you know well.

Phonetics: Enable global phonetic subtitles, like IPA or Pinyin if available

Your dual subtitles and phonetics will be displayed like below.

Look up on video subtitles

You can look up any words on the video subtitles by tapping it. The video will pause while you read the definition.

Tap anywhere outside of the look-up box to close the box and resume the video.

Add words from videos to my Wordbook

After looking up a word in your video subtitles, you can click the [+] icon on the right of your preferred definition to add the word and its meaning to your Wordbook.

Make sure to word goes to the correct Wordbook. Next to Add to, choose your Wordbook.

Video settings

To access video settings, click Setting icon on the bottom left of video service.

Main sub

Main sub is the upper subtitles. You can look up on this subtitles.

Language: Choose the language of the subtitles

Font size: Choose the font size of the subtitles

Format: Choose how the subtitles should look like

Trans sub

Trans sub is the lower subtitles. The subtitles should be in a language that you know well. The settings for Trans sub is similar to that of Main sub.

If the subtitles isn't available in your familiar language, you can enable Auto Translate. Go to Language => Auto Translate

Phonetic

You can enable an extra subtitles for phonetics here. This will be displayed in IPA, Pinyin,... style. The settings of Phonetic is similar to that of Main sub.

Others

You can change speed or subtitle display style here.

Speed: Change video speed

Fast forward/Rewind: Bring the video to a previous/later point

Subtitles view mode: See subtitles in "scroll" or "normal" mode

How do I report a syncing issue?

Make sure you have a stable Internet connection, and that you have triggered sync first. See Synchronizer.

Sometimes, it may take a few minutes to complete the syncing process. If you think there’s a syncing issue, definitely let us know by contacting us through our email glotdojo@ejoylearning.com or go to Contact us => Feedback bug and send us more details about your problem.

How do I report a bug?

To report a bug, go to More => Contact us => Feedback bug. Write in detail what kind of bug you encountered, and press Send. We’ll reach out to you in a couple of working hours (or days if you send during the weekend or an important holiday).

My sound is not working. How do I fix this?*

• Make sure your phone is not muted, and you can hear application sound when using other apps
• Go to Game Setting => Tools & Settings and make sure Sound is enabled.
• Make sure you have the latest version of GlotDojo

If you still hear no sound, don’t worry. Contact us through glotdojo@ejoylearning.com or send detailed information in Feedback bug (under Contact us) and we’ll look into it.

How do I send a feature request?

Go to More => Contact Us => Feature Request. Write clearly what you would like to see on GlotDojo or where you want us to improve, and press Send. We’ll be happy to check it out.

Choose the language on your app interface. GlotDojo App is currently available in English and Vietnamese.

Offline Data

Click Download Continue to import all your learning data (including cards and progress) for the current learning language. After download is completed, you can use GlotDojo to learn that language without Internet.

Wordstore

In Wordstore, you can choose to show definition in your language and/or English, show phonetic transcription and/or image.

Game Settings

In Game Settings you can change Game mode*, turn on/off Speak game* and Sound effect.

*the Game mode and Speak game is at the moment unavailable.

Language Management

In Language Management, you can see languages that are currently learned (Active), archived (Archived) or removed (Deleted).

To edit a language, click the three-dot icon on the left of each language title.

Click Use this set to set a language as a default language set, Edit to edit the set, archive to save this language for later access, or delete to permanently remove the language.

Synchronizer

GlotDojo App will automatically sync across devices when you open the app. But any changes you make afterwards elsewhere (e.g: on GlotDojo extension), like adding words, will not be synced. To save these changes, you will need to trigger sync.

How to sync from GlotDojo extension

On GlotDojo extension, make sure you go to Account => "Sync" after adding words or making some changes. Then, in GlotDojo app, go to Synchronizer => Trigger sync to start syncing from GlotDojo extension.

Auto Archive

This feature is for when you want to automatically archive cardcs that you believe you have mastered. To turn on Auto Archive, click On button.

Conditions

All cards that reach a certain level of your choice will automatically be archived. Choose the level in When Anki Flashcard level is at or above and When writing level is at or above. The default level for both is Level 10 (the highest available available).

Sync with Google Sheets*

You can export your cards to a Google Sheets file and add/edit/delete cards from there. Any changes you make on your Google Sheets file can be synced to your app.

This feature is at the moment under development. We will update this Help section as soon as the feature is available.

To change your email address, go to More. Select Security under My Account. Choose Change Email, then in “Enter new email”, insert the new email address that you want to use for your account.

Change password

To change your password,g o to More. Select Security under My Account. Choose Change Password, then in “Enter new password”, insert the new password that you want to use for your account.

Delete/Deactivate my account

At the moment, you can’t delete or deactivate your account on your own. If you have thought it through and are determined to delete or deactivate your account, feel free to contact us and we’ll be happy to do it for you. In More, click Contact support under CONTACT US, and send us a message through email or Facebook Messenger.

Change avatar

To change your avatar, go to More -> Subscriptions (under My Account). Choose Upload photo and import a photo from your computer.

You can review your saved words with games. There are 2 types of games: Classic Training and Speed Training games. Your word level is only calculated when you play Classic Training games.

How to access games?

You can access review games in 2 ways:

• Go to Home => your currently reviewed wordbook => Dial icon.
  

     Then, choose a game you want to play.

• Go to My Wordbook => click the Action icon on the right of a wordbook => choose “Play with….”.

How is Spaced Repetition used in GlotDojo?

Spaced Repetition works simply by asking you to memorize a card with time intervals increasing each time you see it. For a weak word, you may see it again very soon. For a word with strong presence in your mind, it will be repeated in your practice session after 2 weeks, then 4 weeks and 2 months, or just at the time when the algorithm assumes that you’re about to forget.

In GlotDojo, there are 3 Classic games that track your progress and schedule your practice with Spaced Repetitions: Flash Cards, Writing, Hanzi Writing.

Go to Flash Cards/Writing/Hanzi Writing => Settings => Spaced Repetition => Review Interval to change your review interval. This is the minimum time interval between two reviews, equivalent to Level 1. This means all of the words that are weakest (at level 1) will reappear in your future practice session after this time.

This time interval will be multiplied at each higher level. After changing Review Interval, you can press Press here to see how your custom interval changes with levels.

What are Classic Training games?

Classic games are Spaced Repetition-based games, including Flashcard, Writing and Hanzi Writing.

In Anki Flashcards, a term will be shown, and you need to answer how well you remember it by pressing one of 4 feedback buttons in the bottom - Poor, Hard, Good, Superb.

In Writing, you will be required to write the answer.

In Hanzi Writing, you will be required to answer by drawing Chinese characters in correct order  onto the screen. You will be guided when writing the first answer. After 3 failed attempts to write a stroke, the guide will appear again.

Classic Game Settings

There are specific settings that are applied for Classic Games only. To access these Classic Game settings, go to on the Anki Flashcards/Writing/Hanzi Writing game => Settings.

Lesson Size: Number of cards you want to review per review session.

Feedback buttons: Decide how many feedback buttons you want to use. For example, with 4 buttons, they will be Poor, Fair, Good and Superb

Autoplay audio: Automatically play audio after showing answers

Review Style: Choose how you prefer to review cards.

• Forward: Show the term, answer with the definition
• Reversed: Show the definition, answer with the term
• Half-and-half: Review both sides. At the lower half levels of 0-4, you will see the forward size. At 5-9, you will see the reverse.

Review priority: Decide your preferred type of cards to review.

• Due term first: Review due terms first
• New terms first: Review new terms first
• No priority: Due and new terms will be reviewed equally

Minimum Review Interval: The minimum time interval between two reviews, equivalent to Level 1.

What are Speed Training games?

Speed Training games are non-Spaced-Repetition-based games with a time limit. These games include: Multiple Choice, Reflex, Matching, Rearrange and Atom.

Multiple Choice: In this game, choose your correct answer out of 4 given options.

Reflex: In this game, you’re given a term and its definition. Choose Yes if the definition is correct, choose No if it’s not.

Matching: In this game, move all the terms to their correct meaning.

Rearrange: As its name implies, you rearrange the components of a phrase/compound words or in the case of single words, choose the correct word after listening to the audio.

Atom: In this game, arrange characters in clockwise order on one round, and move irrelevant characters to another round. The number inside the rounds is the number of tries you have left.

What is Review Interval? Can I control it?

In three Classic games, you can choose Settings. Under Spaced Repetition, you can choose Review Interval. This is the minimum time interval between two reviews, equivalent to Level 1. This means all of the words that are weakest (at level 1) will reappear in your future practice session after this time.

This time interval will be multiplied at each higher level. After changing Review Interval, you can press Press here to see how your custom interval changes with levels.

Streak shows how frequently you learn with GlotDojo, or indicates how many days you have used the app in a row.  The more streaks you have, the stronger your learning habit is. Your streak starts at 0, and every day when you have any learning activities on the app, it will increase by 1.

Note that if you don’t learn at all for a whole day, your streak will go back to 0. So, try your best to learn something every day.

What is Times Reviewed?

Each time you’re done reviewing a card in Flashcards and Writing game, it will be counted as 1 review time. Times Reviewed indicates how many cards you have reviewed, and this will vary depending on the language you learn.

What is Minutes Learning?

GlotDojo app counts how many minutes you have learned each language in total.

You can see your Minutes Learning in Home.

How do I track my word progress?

Your word’s progress is tracked when you play Flash Card and Writing.

You can also view the level of a Word set. In Wordbook, look for a Word set. At the bottom of each Word set are two lines that indicate the level of all words in that word set. Next to the line, you see the number of due cards and new cards. Learn more about due cards here.

Click the line to see how many words are in each level.

What are new cards and due cards?

New cards are cards you have never reviewed.

Due cards are cards that are waiting to be reviewed.

Your reviews will be officially counted when you play Anki Flashcards and Writing games.

You can see how many new and due cards you have under each Wordbook in My Wordbook.

What is word level?

Word level is how well you remember a card. Word level is calculated only when you review cards with Anki Flashcards and Writing games.

To access level breakdown, go to My Wordbook > choose a wordbook > touch level bar next to Anki Flashcards or Writing icon.

What is a Wordbook?

A wordbook is a collection of vocabulary. There are 50+ pre-made wordbooks that you can find in Wordstore. These cover the most common topics, from Number, greetings, to Direction. All languages have the same amount of pre-made wordbooks, covering the same topics.

You can also add a wordbook of your own, or add the extension wordbook  by enabling syncing with GlotDojo extension.

How can I add a wordbook?

There are four ways to add a wordset:

On GlotDojo app:

1. Go to Home => Wordstore => choose a pre-made wordbook => Add all

OR

2. Go to My Wordbook => click the "+" icon => Add new wordbook => Save

OR

3. On video screen, click a word in the main subtitle to look up => Create Wb => Add new wordbook => Save

Adding from GlotDojo extension:

After adding new words with GlotDojo extension, click the GlotDojo icon next to Chrome's address bar to open Dropdown setting => Account => Sync.

Then, on your app, go to More => Sync now.

All added words will be synced to your app and stored in "GlotDojo_extension" wordbook in My Wordbook.

What is My Wordbook?

My Wordbook is where you store your wordbooks.

To access My Wordbook, open the app. My Wordbook is next to Home on the navigation menu.

What is a card?

A card gives you information about a word that you added, including definition, images, examples, pronunciation, and audio.

You can create a wordbook with at least one card.

How do I add a card?

You can add a card by adding cards from a Wordstore, from GlotDojo extension, or by adding on video.

Adding from Wordstore

Go to Home => Wordstore => Choose a wordbook => Choose a word => Click Add => OR choose Add all.

Adding from GlotDojo extension

Please see How can I add a Wordbook question above.

Adding from videos

Go to a video => Enable Main subtitle => Click a word on main subtitle => Click Add next to your preferred definition.

How do I archive/delete cards from my Wordbook?

To archive or delete a word, click the three-dot on the right on any word card. Choose archive/ delete.

After you archive a word, you will not be able to practice with it anymore.

After you delete a word, it will be permanently removed from your Wordbook, and you will need to go to its Wordset to re-add it.

How can I edit a card’s meaning/image/audio?

First, go to the card of a word you want to edit.

Then, click the Pen icon on the top right of your screen.

In Editor, you can edit the term, its phonetic transcription, definition, part of speech, context, and audio file.

Click the New definition button to add another definition to that word.

Sync vocabulary from GlotDojo extension

To sync your added vocabulary from GlotDojo extension, go to the dropdown menu (by clicking on the GlotDojo icon next to the address bar in your Chrome browser) => Your Account => Click “Sync” next to your profile picture.

Then, on your GlotDojo app, go to More > Sync Now.

Change keyboard settings

On iOS

On your iPhone, you can add the Chinese language to your keyboard by following these steps below:

Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add new keyboard > Simple Chinese/ Traditional Chinese

For Simple Chinese, you can choose between Pinyin, Handwriting, Shuangpin, or Stroke keyboard.

Choose:

• Pinyin: if you want to type in Pinyin. The keyboard will automatically detect and produce an equivalent word.
• Handwriting: if you want to draw on the screen instead of typing
• Stroke: if you want to type in strokes.
• Shuangpin: similar to Pinyin keyboard + some common Pinyin combinations for faster type speed.

On Android

On different Android keyboards, the interface will be different. However, the keyboard settings would generally look somewhat like this:

Settings > Language & Keyboard > Keyboard > Choose language >Simple Chinese.

Besides adding languages on your system keyboard, you can also download a separate keyboard app.

Using a separate Chinese keyboard app

You can download a special Chinese keyboard on the app store.

On Appstore

You can search for some common Chinese keyboards in the Appstore like Gboard, Microsoft Swiftkey.

On Google Play

Some common keyboard apps on Google Play are Microsoft Swiftkey, Google Pinyin Input, Chinese Keyboard 2021, Pinyin to Chinese.

This is an example on how to set up your own Chinese Keyboard with Microsoft Swiftkey:

Open app > Languages > All languages > Chinese (HK/PRC/Yue/TW)

After selecting your preferred language, scroll back up to Your Languages > click the selected Chinese language > choose your preferred Layout > Save.

To do this, go to the card => "..." icon on the right to open the card menu => Edit.

In the Edit card menu, scroll to see the audio available.

To change the audio, delete the current audio link and paste your own audio link into the text field. Then, click the speaker icon to listen to the new audio before clicking "Save".

How to bookmark a subtitle

Step 1: Hover over a subtitle you want to save

Step 2: Click the star icon next to the subtitle to bookmark (1) OR press Alt + A.

How to see bookmarked subtitle

Step 1: Click the Left arrow icon (2) to show a list of subtitles you bookmarked.

Step 2: Choose a subtitle you want to revisit, and click the Play button (3) on the left of it to watch the scene that goes with it.

NOTE:

• You can un-bookmark a subtitle by clicking the Star icon (4)
• You can print out the bookmarked subtitles by clicking the Print icon (5)

You can look  up any word in your screenshots  using Capture feature.

How to look up with Capture

You can access this feature in three ways.

1. Right click your screenshot >> choose GlotDojo Extension (1) >> choose Glot Capture (2)

2. Choose GlotDojo icon (1) => Click the Capture icon (2)

3. Right-click at GlotDojo icon (1) => select Glot Capture (2)

How to use GlotDojo Capture feature

After opening Capture, press Left mouse and capture any part of your screen that you want to detect text from. A captured screen part is red lined below as an example.

After you screenshot your screen, Capture will start to detect text. The screenshot will appear under the Captured Image box, and the detected text under  Text From Image box.

You can then use GlotDojo on the detected text (1) to translate as you do on normal webpage.

You can save the captured image and its OCR text to your list by clicking Add to My list (2) to view later. Click (3) to view your list of saved images.

Requirement: the video you want to integrate must have close captions [CC] which means you can turn on or off the captions.

When integrated successfully, the lookup can be used by pressing one of the 2 keys: [<,] và [>.] on your keyboard. To translate a subline, press and hold Alt + J

Step 1: Get the element class of the video web from Developer Tools

Open the video web, eg: https://vimeo.com/144716677

Turn on the closed captions [CC]

Open Developer Tools

Right click on the website, choose Inspect. Or you can press and hold Ctrl+Shift+I  for Windows (or Cmd+Opt+I for Mac) to open DevTools.

Under the Element tab of  Developer Tools, press Ctrl + F (Windows) or Control + F (Mac) to search on the Element tabs. (1)

On the search bar, enter a random subtitle sentence you get from the subtitles (2). The below example is:  “but a whole climbing adventure”.

Look for the ” class ” tag (3), the one closest to the subtitle found in Element tab. You’ll then see the content for element class. In this case, it is: vp-captions , the one inside the ” ” (the quote). Double click and press Ctrl + C to copy it.

Step 2: Integrate

Open the Option page of GlotDojo: Right click on the GotDojo icon from the menu bar. On the drop down menu, click on Options as seen in the image below.

On the Options page, please follow these steps:

>> Choose Integrate Video Sites

>> Choose “Add new”

>> Fill in the URL of the video web. Eg: Vimeo.com

>> Fill in the element class got from Step 1. Eg: vp-captions

>> Click "Submit”

Step 3: Look up subtitle on the newly integrated video web

Go back to the video web, press F5 or refresh the web to update your integration status. Now, you can press one of these 2 keys to look up new words on the the subtitles: [<,] & [>.]. You can also press and hold  Alt + J to translate the whole subtitle line.

In addition, GlotDojo also provides the element class for some pages such as:

masterclass.com
osmosis.org
lynda.com
vimeo.com

You need to select the page you want to integrate from the list of available sites and choose Submit.

You couldn’t integrate GlotDojo successfully?

There are 3 reasons that you couldn’t integrate GlotDojo to the video web:

1. You got the incorrect  Element class
2. You couldn’t find the element class
3. Other cases that we haven’t experienced before

Incorrect Element class

Please be informed that the Element class DOES NOT CONTAIN SPACE . If you see an element class like the ones below:

• class = “captionsText ng-xyz” , or
• class = “meta-script 9”

Please remove all characters after the space. In these cases, the element class would be “captionsText” or “meta-script”.

Element class not found

Please take a screenshot of the Developer tool view that you couldn’t find the Element class. Then send the following info to GlotDojo via glot@ejoylearning.com
